Borrow this 4th book in the Vanderbeekers series from my oldest bookshelf。 A fast read。 The first book will always be my favorite。 But I like to check in every once in a while to see what this family is up to。Plus it wins the award for the most beautiful cover of the family biking over the Brooklyn bridge。 Full circle since this was the year I finished the BIG Brooklyn Bridge book。

One of my favorite series to read aloud to my kiddo。 The family is so loving and yet complex。 Their hijinks are both hilarious and also filled with heartfelt moments that help me learn how to be a better parent。 Loved the juxtaposition in this one between the grandparents we seek out and the ones that are right in front of us。 Also loved the facing of how to deal with a difficult relative while preserving their humanity。Warning: if you're reading these books aloud, give yourself space。 They're w One of my favorite series to read aloud to my kiddo。 The family is so loving and yet complex。 Their hijinks are both hilarious and also filled with heartfelt moments that help me learn how to be a better parent。 Loved the juxtaposition in this one between the grandparents we seek out and the ones that are right in front of us。 Also loved the facing of how to deal with a difficult relative while preserving their humanity。Warning: if you're reading these books aloud, give yourself space。 They're wonderful and you'll want to go on for much longer than your voice can。 Ask me how I know。 。。。more

I have always wanted to try this series。 This book was great。 Set in New York City in current times, the members of the family exhibit interests in ongoing learning。 I love that! Life is an adventure and they are "all in"。 The review from School Library journal is right on: "Unabashedly models a better place where the focus is on family, friends, and community and a desire to do good in the world。。。。Highly recommended。" And the last sentence about the author on the back cover is: "One of her pro I have always wanted to try this series。 This book was great。 Set in New York City in current times, the members of the family exhibit interests in ongoing learning。 I love that! Favorite quotes:p。 273 "I hate it when you look on the bright side," Oliver grumbled。p。 290 "Isa, Jessie, Oliver, Hyacinth, and Laney danced under the big maple tree with their grandparents, beneath the charcoal sky, surrounded by the soft glow of New York City lights。" (This is when they were all practicing tai chi。)p。 298 "They carried the stories of the brownstone, of Mama and Papa and of Mr。 Jeet and Miss Josie and of Mr。 Beiderman and Orlando。 They also carried the stories of their grandparents, and of their grandparents' grandparents。 And they carried their own stories, which they were creating each day with each other in the cozy brownstone and in their neighborhood and country and world。" 。。。more

The strength of her books is in her characters, which make it an enjoyable read。

The way I CRY at this series。 Indulge me, but I think the Vanderbeekers and I are similar in that we assume people are good at heart—and what a magical / tender / hopeful thing that is。 One to read, along with Books 1-4。

Always love visiting my favorite NYC family ❤️

My kids and I love the Vanderbeekers。 So sad when you reach the end of a series! In this volume, we meet the Vanderbeekers grandparents。 It was great, just like the other books!

I enjoyed this installment of the Vanderbeekers, just like other the others。 This one had a really fun mystery element。 But I'm really looking forward to the next one (this one sets the stage perfectly)。 These are just such nice, wholesome books。 I enjoy tucking into them and just enjoying the characters。 I enjoyed this installment of the Vanderbeekers, just like other the others。 This one had a really fun mystery element。 But I'm really looking forward to the next one (this one sets the stage perfectly)。 These are just such nice, wholesome books。 I enjoy tucking into them and just enjoying the characters。 。。。more

One of my favorite installments yet of this outstanding series— a really beautiful and tender story of intergenerational trauma, and the blessings and hardships of being part of a family。 Like other books in the series, it balances winsome and admirable characters with tough subject matter, handling hard emotions in a way that never condescends to young readers。 It also ends on a cliffhanger, a first for this series— and something my boys were none too happy about。

Courtney

I have enjoyed my time with the Vanderbeekers。 The grandfather in this one was my favorite part。

This was another great Vanderbeekers book! I liked learning more about their heritage (as they learned about their grandparents' stories for the first time)。 Once again, siblings working together was the biggest theme of the book, which I love。 This was another great Vanderbeekers book! Once again a very cute little story! This family is just adorable to read about, and since it's a lower reading level it takes no brainpower to read, which is nice when I'm tired。Also I didn't realize that their grandparents on the mom's side were Chinese until near the end of the story。 I don't know if I was reading too fast or what, but I liked that cultural difference that was incorporated into the book, as I feel like that's a good thing for kids to learn about。From reading the acknowledgeme Once again a very cute little story! The Vanderbeekers Make a Wish carried on the sweet family dynamics and wonderful schemes from previous books。 I enjoyed watching the children work together to learn more about their extended family and deal with somewhat unwanted relatives。 One of my favorite things was how the author brought in a character from an earlier book, giving him an unexpectedly important role。 Still, the book lacked something and was a touch less believable than the previous ones。 Nevertheless, I do intend to continue The Vanderbeekers Make a Wish carried on the sweet family dynamics and wonderful schemes from previous books。 I enjoyed watching the children work together to learn more about their extended family and deal with somewhat unwanted relatives。 One of my favorite things was how the author brought in a character from an earlier book, giving him an unexpectedly important role。 Still, the book lacked something and was a touch less believable than the previous ones。 Nevertheless, I do intend to continue with the series and likely re-read it someday。 。。。more

Oh, this series, this family and this audiobook narrator are such a delight - the complete package!
